Living with atrial fibrillation involves more than receiving the right treatment—it also requires understanding the condition, the available care options, and how to actively participate in healthcare decisions. For people living with atrial fibrillation (AF), navigating medical terminology, treatment options, and the impact of associated health conditions can often feel overwhelming. To help bridge this gap, the ARISTOTELES project has published a new Patient Information Booklet, designed to explain atrial fibrillation and the project's work in a clear, accessible, and patient-friendly way. 

Developed for patients, their families, and caregivers, the booklet uses plain language, intuitive graphics, and practical explanations to help make complex medical concepts easier to understand. By providing reliable, easy-to-read information, it aims to support more informed conversations between patients and healthcare professionals and encourage greater involvement in care decisions. 

What You'll Find in the Booklet 

The booklet offers a comprehensive introduction to atrial fibrillation, explaining what the condition is, its most common symptoms, causes, and potential complications. It also explores the concept of multimorbidity—the coexistence of two or more long-term health conditions—and why treating the whole person, rather than individual diseases, is essential for improving outcomes. The booklet also highlights the connection between cardiovascular disease and mental wellbeing, emphasising the importance of addressing both physical and emotional health throughout the care journey. 

Readers will also discover how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare by helping clinicians provide more personalised care. The booklet explains, in accessible terms, how AI can support earlier detection of complications, improve individual risk assessment, and assist healthcare professionals in tailoring treatment plans. Importantly, it reassures patients that AI is designed to support—not replace—the expertise of healthcare professionals, with all medical decisions remaining in the hands of healthcare professionals. 
Another section introduces the ARISTOTELES project, outlining its mission to develop and validate AI-powered tools that improve personalised care for people living with atrial fibrillation and multimorbidity. The booklet explains how the project's international clinical study works, why patient participation is essential, and how participants' privacy and personal data are protected throughout the research process.
